Common Core Videos

Math coach Nick Timpone takes us from Common Core standards in kindergarten through Grade 5 and demonstrates hands-on ideas, games, activities and models that teachers can take back to their classrooms or parents can use as a tool as they help their children with their homework.

Kindergarten: Count to tell the number of objects. Compare numbers.

Kindergarten: Work with numbers 11-19 to gain foundations for place value.

First grade: Extend the counting sequence. Understand place value. Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract.

First grade : Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. Understand and apply properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction. Add and subtract within 20. Work with addition and subtraction equations.

Second grade: Understand place value. Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract.

Second grade: Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. Add and subtract within 20. Work with equal groups of objects to gain foundations for multiplication.

3.NBT & 3.NF

Third grade: Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic. Develop understanding of fractions as numbers.

Third grade: Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division. Understand properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division. Multiply and divide within 100. Solve problems involving the four operations, and identify and explain patterns in arithmetic.

Fourth grade: Generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers. Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic.

Fourth grade: Extend understanding of fraction equivalence and ordering. Build fractions from unit fractions. Understand decimal notation for fractions, and compare decimal fractions.

Fourth grade: Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems. Generate and analyze patterns.

Fifth grade: Understand the place value system. Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths.

Fifth grade: Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions. Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division.

Our Clients

Nick is a math guy, but he’s just as excited about reading and writing instruction. I’m always thrilled to see him in my classroom because I know that the follow-up conversations are going to be some of the most helpful feedback sessions I get as a practitioner. After our meetings, I feel proud of what I’ve accomplished and excited to make my next lesson even better.

Theodora Redding, 9th grade English Teacher

Nick Timpone is a dedicated and thoughtful mentor whose incredible insight has challenged me to become a better and more effective teacher.  In our bi-monthly meetings, he created an environment for reflection and professional growth by providing timely and constructive feedback that targeted specific areas for improvement.   He worked with me to develop engaging and focused lessons that met the individual needs of my students.  I have been fortunate enough to work with Nick this past year and under his guidance learned more about best teaching practices than in any of my previous six years in education.

Jason Kunka, 9th grade History Teacher

I cannot say enough about how much Nick’s advice impacted my teaching and how his instructional coaching improved the overall school environment.

Nicole Pollio, 10th & 11th grade History Teacher

Nick’s passion for pushing students to think deeply about what they are learning inspires teachers to rethink everything that is happening in their classrooms.

Sam Fragomeni, Director of Elementary Schools & Lead Principal, HVA

Nick Timpone has come to our school for several years now, helping our teachers implement the Singapore Math program. He has provided excellent demonstrations of how lessons can be conducted, how we might choose topics to cover, and how to use best practices within the Singapore Math curriculum. His help has been invaluable; our teachers eagerly await his return each year. I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Cilla Bercovici, Convent of the Sacred, Heart Greenwich, CT

Nick has opened my school’s eyes to Singapore math. Through Nick, our students have been able to build their basic foundation of math and progress to more abstract mathematical concepts.  Furthermore, all these concepts align with the Common Core. Our students and teachers are always intrigued and engaged when he comes into our classrooms to teach concepts through Singapore Math. I have seen him take a complex word problem and within minutes his modeling of a tape diagram clicks for all of us. We all love his presence and cannot wait for his visits with us next year!
